ANSWERS TO IMPORTANT QUESTIONS ON HOUSING . . .


     We have found that both parents and students are concerned about the place where a student will be during the school year.  We have tried to answer the most asked questions.  If a parent or student should have a concern, please feel free to call the Residential Housing Office, 1-800-432-5899 or (225) 771-3590 or write to Southern University, Residential Housing Department, P. APPLYING FOR HOUSING

Q-How does a student apply for housing?

A-When a student applies for admission to the University, an Application for University Residence Halls is provided with the Admissions Application. The student should carefully complete the application and return it, along with a $50 deposit (money order or cashier’s check) to Southern University, Residential Housing Office, P. O. Box 9460, Baton Rouge, LA  70813-9460.

Q- When does a student have to apply for housing?

A-The student (beginning freshman) is encouraged to apply by May 1st for the Fall Semester.  Applications are received until all spaces are filled.

Q-If a beginning freshman is not admitted into the university and desires to cancel housing, is the $50.00 deposit refundable?

A-Yes, the $50.00 deposit is refundable. The student must submit a written and signed statement and return the housing assignment letter to the Residential Housing Department requesting a refund of the deposit.

ASSIGNMENTS

Q-When can a student find out his/her assignment?

A-Students will be mailed their residence hall assignments in June.

ROOMS

Q-What is furnished in the rooms?

A-The rooms are furnished with twin beds, chairs, closets and a desk.

Q-What does a student need to bring?

A-This is by no means an all inclusive list, but students have suggested the following items: Twin bed spread, 4 twin sheets, 2 blankets, pillow and pillow cases, laundry bag, folding laundry rack, padlock, iron and ironing board, telephone, television, radio, clock, microwave, shower shoes (flip flops), shower caddy, towels and wash cloths, flashlight and batteries, trash can, mop, broom and surge protector.

Q-Can a student have a refrigerator or other appliances?

A-Small refrigerators (less than 4 cubic feet, 1.5 amps or 180 watts) are allowed. The use of a surge protector is required. The usage of the following items is not permitted: open element   appliances (electric skillets & grills, hot plates, slow cookers, etc.), sun lamps, electric heaters or extension cords.

Q-Which residence hall are freshman students assigned?

A-Freshmen are assigned to the Freshman Complex, Boley Hall for females and  Jones Hall for males.

Q-Are Honor’s residence halls available?                                         

A-Yes, Bethune and Washington Halls are for females and Bradford Hall is for males.                                                                  

Q-How many students per room?

A-There are two students per room.

Q-Are rooms air-conditioned?

A-Yes, all residence halls are air-conditioned.

ROOMMATES/ROOM CHANGE

Q-If a student request a roommate, can he/she be sure that they will be assigned together?

A-Yes, if both requests are received before the deadline and assignments are granted, two students assigned to the same residence hall may be roommates by arriving together and in advance approaching the assignment station together or making the request in advance and in writing.

Q-How does Housing assign roommates if a student did not request one?

A-If the student did not request a roommate, a roommate is assigned at random.

MAIL

Q-How does a parent send mail to a student living in a residence hall?

A-The student pays for rent of a Post Office Box from the University through his/her billing Statement of Account at Registration. Upon payment of fees the student must take his/her paid receipt to the University Post Office to receive an assigned mail box.

PAYMENT

Q-How does a student pay for his/her residence hall room, meal card and tuition?

A-The charges, for the residence hall room, meal card and tuition are placed on the student's University account and are payable to the University during the registration period. Payment must be paid in full by financial aid (Pell Grant, Loans and/or Scholarships), cash, money order, cashier’s check or credit card.  Also, payment may be paid on-line through Jagnet once a billing Statement of Account has been issued.  Personal checks are not acceptable means of payment.

ROOM CLEANING

Q-Will anyone come in and clean a student’s room?

A-No, custodians are primarily responsible for cleaning hallways, community bathrooms and other common areas.

TELEPHONE SERVICE

Q-How does a student get telephone service?

A-The student must supply his/her own instrument.  University provides a line for local service only.  A student must acquire a calling card for toll service or call collect

MEAL PLAN

Q-Are student required to purchase a meal plan?

A-Yes.  All students living in the residence hall must purchase a 7-day meal plan.

Freshmen Living in Upperclassman Residence Halls

Q-Are freshmen permitted to live in upperclassman residence hall?

A-Upperclassman residence halls are reserved for upperclass students.  However, waivers are granted to some freshman students who are older, have high grade point averages and when space is available.

Student Residency Requirement

Q-Do students have the option to live off campus if they desired it?

A-All freshman students are required to live on campus if they live beyond a 25 mile radius of the university.  Upperclass students have the options of living on or off campus.

CAR/PARKING

Q-Are freshmen allowed to have a car on campus?

A- Freshman students are not permitted to have cars on campus.

PETS

Q-Are students allowed to keep pets?

A-Students are not permitted to keep pets in their rooms.

COOKING

Q-Are students allowed to cook in residence halls?

A- No, cooking is not allowed in the rooms.

BANKING

Q-What about banking needs?

A-There are ATM Banking Machines located in the Smith-Brown Memorial Union. Commercial banks are also located near the campus.

APPLICATION FOR RESIDENCE HALLS

Q-Should a new application for residence hall be submitted for the academic year?

A-New applications for residence halls are due before December 20th for current freshmen and upperclassmen for the next academic year.

NOTE:  Fall application will automatically encompasses housing request for the Spring Semester.  Applicants who were not in campus housing the previous Fall

Semester and desire housing for the Spring Semester must submit an application by November 1st.    Deadline for Application for the Summer Session is April 1st.
